A Matter of Balance
Gain confidence with A Matter of Balance (AMOB).
Falls are more common than strokes
and can be just as serious.
Over
60 years old? Concerned about falling, or do you have a history of falls?
Interested in improving balance, flexibility, and strength? Falls are
preventable! Make a difference!
A Matter of Balance is a program
specifically designed to reduce the fear of falling, prevent falls, help seniors
handle falls, and increase activity levels among older adults through exercises
designed to increase core strength and balance. Physical inactivity is a
significant risk for falls and fall-related injures in older adults.
The program is designed for small
groups of older adults living independently in community settings in their own
homes or senior housing. Sessions focus on promoting a view of falls and fear of
falling as controllable; setting realistic goals for increasing activity;
changing the environment to reduce fall risk factors; and promoting exercise to
increase strength and balance.
AMOB is continuously seeking
volunteers to teach these classes, as well as venues where the classes may be
offered, such as community centers, senior housing, churches and congregate meal
sites. Training is provided by Bexar Area Agency on Aging (BAAA) and Alamo Area
Agency on Agency (AAAA) free of charge, so long as the trainer will commit to
teaching the class at least twice each calendar year. Trainers need not have a
specific background in physical fitness. Requirements are the ability to meet
weekly with a class and to lead simple stretching and chair exercises along with
prepared material provided by the AAAs.

who took the course and then were trained to teach the
classes to others.
