January 2, 2007  9 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Incident Reporting and Investigation for Nursing Facilities

This course is intended to provide guidance to nursing facilities in preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation (A/N/E). It also provides information on the reporting of A/N/E and other reportable incidents to the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services in accordance with regulatory requirements. The course highlights procedures for the investigation and documentation of allegations of A/N/E and other incidents that must be reported that may or may not constitute A/N/E. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.75 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 4.5 contact hours for nurses, and 3.75 credit hours for social workers. 

February 5, 2007  9 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Medical Director (F-501)

This course covers the interpretive guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on the roles, responsibilities, and duties of the medical director. It also covers CMS direction to surveyors on how to survey for compliance with F501 and how to determine the severity level of deficiencies cited at F501. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.25 clock hours for long-term care administrators and 3.25 credit hours for social workers.

March 5, 2007    9 a.m. - 4 p.m.   Dehydration and Weight Loss      

Dehydration and Weight Loss: This is the new and improved version of the older class. Two of the most common and perhaps under-recognized complications that can occur in the long-term care setting are dehydration and malnutrition. This course provides participants with useful information to assess hydration and weight changes, prevent dehydration and weight loss and develop interventions for both conditions. The course will show how surveyors review to determine if dehydration and weight loss are expected or unexpected events.

Please bring a calculator with you to class. This course provides the following continuing education: 5 clock hours for Certified Dietary Managers, 5 clock hours for Long Term Care Administrators, 6 contact hours for Nurses, 5 hours for Registered Dieticians, 5 hours for Registered Dietetic Technicians, and 5 credit hours for Social Workers.

April 2, 2007    9 a.m. - 4 p.m.    Advance Directives in Long Term Care     

Advance Directives in Long Term Care: This comprehensive course gives participants information regarding types of advance directives available and examples of forms to complete when considering advance directives. It also examines requirements and limitations of advance directives. This course provides the following continuing education - 5.5 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 6.6 contact hours for nurses, and 5.5 credit hours for social workers.

May 10, 2007    9 a.m. - 4 p.m.     Emergency Preparedness (New)                                                                         

Emergency Preparedness: This course provides guidance that you can use to develop your disaster plan. You will learn about the basic steps of emergency preparedness (risk assessment, mitigation, plan development, response, recovery, and continuity) and the eight core functions of a disaster plan. The course applies to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, intermediate care facilities for persons with mental retardation or related conditions, adult day care facilities, and home and community support services agencies. Note: The course does not give you a disaster plan. CEU information is pending.

June 4, 2007    9 a.m. to 1 p.m.    Infection Control       

Infection Control: This comprehensive class covers infections that occur due to improper infection control techniques and how these infections can be prevented. The class also covers how the surveyor looks at infection control in Nursing Facilities, ICF/MR Facilities and Assisted Living Facilities. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.75 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 1.6 contact hours for nurses, and 3.75 credit hours for social workers.

July 2, 2007     9 a.m. to 12 p.m.   The Top Ten Nursing Facility Deficiencies  

The Top Ten Nursing Facility Deficiencies: This course provides participants with knowledge of deficiencies cited in Nursing Facilities for the year 2005. The class provides information on deficiencies and violations. Additionally, examples of facility system problems and practices are identified in accordance with regulatory requirements. This course provides the following continuing education - 2.75 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 3.6 contact hours for Nurses and 2.75 credit hours for Social Workers.

August 9, 2007  9 AM to 1 PM    

Common Life Safety Code Problems: This course is designed to help prevent fire safety problems in nursing homes, ICFs-MR facilities, assisted living facilities, and adult day care facilities. The course begins by reviewing the top 10 life safety code deficiencies or violations. The course then suggests several ways to help facilities prevent the common life safety code problems and comply with fire safety rules. This course provides the following continuing education - 5.5 clock hours for Long Term Care Administrators and 5.5 credit hours for Social Workers.
 

September 5, 2007  9 AM to 1 PM

Writing Acceptable Plans of Correction for Assisted Living Facilities: This course was designed for provider staff of Assisted Living Facilities in providing insight and understanding of how to write acceptable plans of correction. It provides program specific information and what action(s) are taken to correct violations. Additionally, providers are given the opportunity to practice writing skills and to develop an acceptable plan of correction. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.75 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 4.0 contact hours for nurses and 3.75 credit hours for social workers.

 

October 1, 2007  9 AM to 4 PM

Resident Rights and Quality of Life: This course is intended to provide nursing facility providers insight and understanding of the rights of residents of long term care facilities guaranteed under federal and state law. State and federal regulations regarding resident rights and quality of life are covered in detail. Providers are given opportunities to identify examples of deficient practices regarding resident rights, dignity, and quality of life. Class discussion also focuses on facility practices that comply with state and federal regulations and protect, support, and promote the rights of residents and enhance their quality of life. This course provides the following continuing education - 5.5 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 6.3 contact hours for nurses, and 5.5 credit hours for social workers.
 

November 5, 2007  9 AM to 1 PM

Sensitivity to Aging : To address the aging process. The physical and mental changes residents encounter with aging. This course was designed to enhance the provider staff and Regulatory Services staff understanding aging issues individuals served by a Nursing Facility (NF) face. This course is applicable to professionals employed in a nursing facility (NF), assisted living facility (ALF), This course is applicable to professionals employed in a nursing facility (NF), assisted living facility (ALF), or an adult day care facility. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.5 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 3.5 contact hours for nurses, and 3.5 credit hours for social workers.

Detecting and Preventing Abuse and Neglect in Nursing Facilities: This course was designed to enhance the provider staff and Regulatory Services staff understanding of abuse and neglect issues pertaining to individuals served by a Nursing Facility (NF). The focus is intended to provide a generic approach to the detection and prevention of abuse and neglect. This course is applicable to professionals employed in a nursing facility (NF), assisted living facility (ALF), or an adult day care facility. This course provides the following continuing education - 5.5 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 6 contact hours for nurses, and 5.5 credit hours for social workers.

Incident Reporting and Investigations: This course is intended to provide guidance to Nursing Facilities, ICF/MR, Assisted Living Facilities, and Adult Day Care Facilities in preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation (A/N/E). February 6, 2006    8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Life Safety Code and Maintenance of NF

Life Safety Code and Maintenance of Nursing Facilities: This course helps participants maintain their fire alarm, sprinkler, and HVAC systems. Other modules discuss the maintenance of a building's construction type, smoke barriers, and corridor doors. Commercial cooking equipment, medical gas, and exit requirements are also discussed. The final module looks at additional maintenance requirements for facilities that are not fully sprinklered.  Note: Each participant must bring to the training a copy of the floor plan of his (or her) facility. This course provides the following continuing education - 5.5 hours for Administrators of nursing homes that are fully sprinklered, 6.5 hours for Administrators of nursing homes that are not fully sprinklered. 

March 6, 2006        9 a.m. – 1 p.m.   Medical Director F-501

April 3, 2006          9 a.m. – 1 p.m.   Psychoactive Medication

This comprehensive class reviews the classifications of psychoactive medications as well as the side effects and adverse reactions relative to those drugs. In addition the class discusses the implications of Senate Bill 355, covers the definition of informed consent, and the guidelines of Provider Letter # 02-22. Finally the class will review the survey process associated with psychoactive medications and the new rules. This class has been updated to include the ICF/MR program. Effective June 14, 2004, this course provides the following continuing education - 3.25 hours for Long Term Care Administrators, 4.2 contact hours for Nurses and 3.25 credit hours for Social Workers. 

May 1, 2006            9 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Top Ten Deficiencies-Nursing Facilities (NF)

This course provides participants with knowledge of deficiencies cited in Nursing Facilities for the year 2004. The class provides information on deficiencies and violations. Additionally, examples of facility system problems and practices are identified in accordance with regulatory requirements. This course provides the following continuing education - 3 hours for Long Term Care Administrators, 3.6 contact hours for Nurses and 3.25 credit hours for Social Workers. 

June 5, 2006            9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Dehydration & Weight Loss

This comprehensive class covers dehydration and unintended weight loss. These are two of the most common complications that can occur in the long term care setting. It addresses the risk factors for dehydration and weight loss and identifies measures facilities can implement to prevent these occurrences. The class also covers how the surveyor looks at dehydration and weight loss including end of life issues.

This course provides the following continuing education - 3 educational clock hours/contact hours for Registered Dietitians, Registered Dietetic Technicians and the Certifying Board for Dietary Manager's Certified Dietary Managers, 3 hours for Long Term Care Administrators, 3 contact hours for Nurses and 3 credit hours for Social Workers. 

July 10, 2006           9 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Pain Management

This particular course is intended to familiarize participants with ways to manage pain in the treatment of acute and chronic illness. The class also identifies guidelines for Pharmacologic Pain Management. The focus pertains to understanding the types of pain for proper assessment, documenting, and effectively controlling pain. This course provides the following continuing education 3 hours for Long Term Care Administrators, 3 contact hours for Nurses and 3 credit hours for Social Workers.

August 7, 2006        9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Detecting & Preventing Abuse & Neglect

This course takes a proactive look at detection and prevention of abuse and neglect. Those who attended abuse/neglect training in 2001 will recognize that this course is a condensed version of the original CMS * material (Abuse and Neglect—Detection and Prevention). Six key components will be discussed. Effective June 14, 2004, this course provides the following continuing education - 4.75 hours for Long Term Care Administrators, 6 contact hours for Nurses and 4.75 credit hours for Social Workers.

*September 5, 2006        9 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Dental Health

This course provides participants information on the causes of oral disease and interventions to prevent oral health problems. Participants will receive information on dental abnormalities as well as systemic diseases and conditions that affect the elderly. This class also covers how the surveyor looks at dental health in nursing facilities. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.75 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 2.7 contact hours for nurses, and 3.75 credit hours for social workers.

October 2, 2006      9 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Pressure Ulcers

This comprehensive class discusses the causes of pressure ulcers and describes how they can be staged. It also describes the risk factors and identifies methods of prevention. The class includes the survey process and how to determine if a pressure ulcer is avoidable. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.75 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 1.4 contact hours for nurses, and 3.75 credit hours for social workers. 

November 6, 2006     8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  Life Safety Code and Maintenance of Nursing Facilities

This course provides the following continuing education - 5.5 clock hours for long-term care administrators of nursing facilities that are fully sprinkled and 6.5 clock hours for long-term care administrators of nursing facilities that are not fully sprinklered. Note: Each participant must bring to the training a copy NURSING FACILITY REQUIREMENTS 19.300 THROUGH 19.344 as well as Facility Floor Plan.

December 4, 2006  9 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Understanding the Nursing Facility Survey Process

This class covers the history of Medicare and Medicaid and the licensure survey process in long term care facilities from the Social Security Act of 1935 to the present. The class is an overview of resident centered and outcome oriented Nursing Facility Survey according to the Appendix P. Considerations in the care of the individuals in the long term care settings will also be presented. This course provides the following continuing education - 3.25 clock hours for long-term care administrators, 3 contact hours for nurses, and 3.25 credit hours for social workers.

Topic:  Pain Management in Long Term Care.  This particular course is intended to familiarize participants with ways to manage pain in the treatment of acute and chronic illness.  The class also identifies guidelines for Pharmacological Pain Management.  The focus pertains to understanding the types of pain for proper assessment, documenting, and effectively controlling pain.  Continuing education credit is available for Social Workers, Nurses, and Nursing Facility Administrators.

Topic:  Dental Health in Nursing Facilities.  This course provides participants information on the causes of oral disease and interventions to prevent oral health problems.  Participants will receive information on dental abnormalities as well as systemic diseases and conditions that affect the elderly.  This class also covers how the surveyor looks at Dental Health in Nursing Facilities.  2.7 contact hours are available for Registered Nurses.  Continuing education credit is available for Social Workers, Nurses, and Nursing Facility Administrators.

October 16, 2003 -- Presenter:  Barbara Weathersby, MS, RD, LD
Topic:  Dehydration and Weight Loss in Long Term Care:  This comprehensive class covers dehydration and unintended weight loss.  These are two of the most common complications that can occur in the long term care setting.  It addresses the risk factors for dehydration and weight loss and identifies measures facilities can implement to prevent these occurrences.  The class also covers how the surveyor looks at dehydration and weight loss including end of life issues.  3.0 CE's are available for Registered Dietitians, Registered Dietetic Technicians, CBDM certified Dietary Managers, Nurses, Social Workers, and Nursing Facility Administrators.

November 19, 2003 -- Presenter:  Linda Rossler, RN, BSN
Topic:  Infection Control:  This comprehensive class covers infections that occur due to improper infection control techniques and how these infections can be prevented.  The class includes information on SARS and the flu.  The class also covers how the surveyor looks at infection control in Nursing Facilities, ICF/MR Facilities, and Assisted Living Facilities.

December 17, 2003 -- Celebrating the Vision III -- Guest Speakers will be:  Evelyn Delgado, Assistant Deputy Commissioner TDHS/LTCR, and John F. Willis, State Ombudsman - Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.  Topic:  State Ombudsman Program, and Update on the HB 2292 Health and Human Services Commission/ Department of Aging and Disability Services.  There will be plenty of food, fun, entertainment, and door prizes.  New participants are welcome!

May 15, 2002 – Long Term Care Activity Directors.

Presenters:  Mike Barragan, Activity Director, Trinity Care Center, and President of the Alamo Area Activity Professionals, and Robert Milligan, Surveyor with TDHS Long Term Care Regulatory.

Topic:  The Alamo Area Chapter of Activity Professionals is a networking organization that helps Activity Directors in Long Term Care & Assisted Living Facilities, in sharing ideas and updates on the latest concepts in activity programming for seniors in these types of facilities. The presentation will also include information on what surveyors are looking for in the Activity Department during annual surveys.  This opportunity will address such questions as:  What about 1 – 1 in room?  What about Documentation?  What about the alert or confused residents?

 

June 19, 2002 – Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Nursing Home Quality Initiative: Texas Department on Aging.  A combined training with the Elders’ Advocacy Network and Bexar / Alamo Area Agencies on Aging Volunteer/Staff Ombudsmen, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Including a session on Skin Breakdowns, and program overview from the Center on Independent Living (C.O.I.L.).

August 21, 2002 – Bexar/Alamo AAA’s Family Caregiver Support Program, created by Congress in 2000, as part of the Older Americans Act.

Presenters:  Roland Torres and Nellie Garay, on the dramatic impact this legislation will have in providing support to Family Caregivers.

Topic:  Range of services – Adult Day Care, Institutional Respite, Homemaker/Personal Assistance, Health Maintenance, Residential Repair, Transportation, Home Delivered Meals, Emergency Response, and the Eligibility Criteria for the program.

 

September 18, 2002 -     TDHS overview Quality Monitoring and Rapid Response Teams provisions of Senate Bill 1839, and Educational Program on Restraint Reduction for Long Term Care Facilities.

Topics:    Adult immunizations for seniors, focus on influenza (flu) and pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccination promotion, and foreign travel immunization services.

 

November 20, 2002 -     Texas State Veterans Nursing Homes currently located in Temple, Big Springs, Bonham, and Floresville.  Announcement of location of two (2) new homes and State Veterans Cemeteries.

Presenter:    Eileen Kemp, Marketing Specialist for the Veterans Land Board, State of Texas.

Topics:    How to quality for the Veterans Homes and Cemeteries, cost for the veteran to live there, services provided, why would a vet be denied, census to date, how homes are operated and funded.

 

December 18, 2002 -     Elders' Advocacy Network: Celebrating the Vision (second year success!).  We are also recognizing the Bexar AAA Volunteer Ombudsman for their valuable contributions to the elderly in our community.  A very special pre-holiday event.  Our guest speaker will be Mr. John F. Willis, State Ombudsman - Texas Department on Aging.  Topic: TDOA Ombudsman Program Update, including a description of the program's current quality initiative on restraint reduction, how consumers and advocates can use information from the CMS Nursing Home Quality Improvement Initiative, and legislative issues impacting nursing home residents.

We will have plenty of food, goodies, and entertainment.

February 21, 2001Inaugural Brown-Bag meeting:

Presenters: Al J. Notzon, III, AACOG Executive Director, addressed the primary goals and purpose of this new forum, which consisted of practitioners from long term care community, (which included Nursing Home / Assisted Living Administrators, Social Workers, Activity Directors, Nursing Staff, as well as the City of San Antonio Senior /Social Services staff, Region 20 Education Service Center/Health Career Technologies Directors, Various Independent School District Health Careers Coordinators, Home Health Care Providers, etc.).  Tina Richards – Access & Assistance Coordinator, and Nick Monreal, Network Facilitator/Staff Ombudsman, presented an overview of AACOG/Bexar AAA Programs and Services.

Note: Through December 31, 2001, the Elders’ Advocacy Network has grown to an active membership of seventy (70) organizations, and monthly meeting participation averages from 27 to 85 in attendance.

Topics:  Setting the Agenda” – Participant needs assessment topics, included Legal Awareness Issues, Training on Dealing with Aggressive Residents, Nutrition Education, Legislative Elder Issues, Residents Rights, Aging Sensitivity Training, Family Council Training, Ombudsman Program Orientation, Benefits Counseling, etc.

April 18, 2001 – Aging Sensitivity Education Model:

Presenters:  The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio / Aging Research and Education, Dr. Carolyn Marshall, Linda Pruski, and Cheryl Blalock.

Topics:  User-friendly modalities, applied through a teaching concept, which offers opportunities to expand and integrate long-term care Certified Nurse Assistants’ training with research-based classroom curriculum.

 

May 16, 2001 – Family Council training / Comprehensive Workshop:

Presenter:  Nick Monreal, Jr., AACOG / Bexar Area Agency on Aging Staff Ombudsman.

Topic:  Family Council training on the practitioners’ guide “Big Wheels, Little Wheels”, prepared by Nick Monreal for long-term care facility Family Council development and training. Note: This model and training have since been replicated by the Texas Department on Aging, various Regional AAA’s, and the National Citizens’ Coalition for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR) has asked for this expertise in preparation for their development of a national video on Family Council Training.

 

June 20, 2001 – Role of Spirituality in the well-being of the Elderly:

Presenter:  Louise Gregg, Director of the Spirituality & Aging Project, of The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. / Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health.

Topic:  The newest program at the Center, which addresses the role of spirituality in the well being of older adults and their caregivers, “a curriculum based on this program is being developed for Nursing Homes nationwide”.

 

July 18, 2001 – State Library’s Talking Book Program:

Presenter:  Sara Stiffler, Director of the Audio Production division for the Texas State Library Talking Book Program.

Topic:  A FREE service for any Texan who cannot read standard print due to temporary or permanent disabilities, such as low vision (examples: macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts), blindness and physical handicaps that prevent a person from holding a book or turning the pages.  Books are available on cassette tape, in large print, and in Braille, and the program even provides the cassette player the patrons use to listen to the audio books.  The program has a collection of more than 80,000 titles, as well as more than 80 regional and national magazines for all age groups.  Patrons can sign-up individually and/or through an extended care/nursing home/ assisted living facility.  All services are FREE, including the postage-free delivery / return process.

 

August 15, 2001 – Appeal Hearing Process:

Presenter:  Joseph A. Morales, a Senior Hearing Official with the Texas Department of Human Services.

Topic:  The Appeal Process, what facilities should know to prepare for an Appeal Hearing, what Hearing Procedures to expect, what documents to bring, who to bring, etc.

In addition, there was ample opportunity for questions and answers.

 

September 19, 2001 – Alzheimer’s Issues and Metropolitan Health District information:

Presenters:  Jennifer Scott, from the Alzheimer’s Association / San Antonio Chapter, and Rita Salazar, Health Program Supervisor / Adolescent & Adult Immunization Projects.

Topics:  Topics that can help caregivers, health care providers, Ombudsmen, advocates, and the general public better understand and identify Alzheimer’s disease; and up-dated information on the status of this winter’s vaccine inventories for the elderly.

 

October 17, 2001 – Legislative Issues affecting the elderly:

Presenters:  Paula Johnson, Executive Director TSHL Foundation, Peggy McCarter, TSHL Foundation Board Member, and Texas Silver-Haired Legislature Members:

Edward Dylla, Homer Lear, Robert Zepeda, Sr., Al Lambrecht, and Carlos Higgins, Austin TSHL member / Co-chair of the TSHL Legislative Committee.

Topic:  TSHL Members asked for issue-oriented input from the Elders’ Advocacy Network participants, especially those representing the Long-Term Care Industry, Advocacy Programs, and Family Members.

 

November 14, 2001 – The status of long-term care insurance:

Presenters:  Cindy Daugherty and Stanley Goldman, form Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.

Topic:  The changing face of Long-Term Care, preparing financially for these expenses, and how this could impact the providers and practitioners.  They will discuss Medicare and Medicaid’s part in an individual’s care and how HIPAA has changed long-term care coverages.

December 19, 2001 – Orientation on the use of Adaptive Equipment:

Presenter:  Deborah Salinas, BSN, and Peter Daniel – Texas Commission For The Blind. 

Topic: Building confidence through understanding; to develop an awareness, sensitivity and appreciation for individuals with visual disabilities and what they are capable of accomplishing in their workplace and life. Also, to demonstrate respect for individuals as equal partners and colleagues in the workplace and confidence in the consumers we serve.
