PROJECT S.I.E.N.
Seniors Involved in
Exercise and Nutrition

One
million Texans have a diagnosis of diabetes and another half-million are
undiagnosed. Project SIEN is an evidence-based program whose goal is to
prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 Diabetes among seniors.
Project S.I.E.N. Components
- Low-fat/low-glycemic meals
- Semi-annual health screenings
- 150 minutes/week of physical activity
- Salsa Caliente: a 12-week Health and
Nutrition Education course
Benefits for Participants
- Reduce their chances of developing Type 2
Diabetes
- Increase their knowledge of diabetes and
its relationship to nutrition and physical activity
- Modify their lifestyle and eating habits
Commitment from Participants
- Participate in the nutrition program
- Attend health and nutrition classes
- Participate in physical activity classes
offered 2-3 times/week at their senior center with an additional 30 minutes on
their own
- Participate in health screenings twice a
year
